Researchers Harness Dual Magnetic Interfaces to Control Valley Excitons in MoS₂
A team of scientists has unveiled a novel strategy to manipulate quantum states in two-dimensional semiconductors by harnessing dual magnetic proximity effects. In a newly designed heterostructure composed of CrOCl (antiferromagnet)–MoS₂–YIG (ferromagnet), the researchers discovered rich interfacial phenomena that open new opportunities for spin–valley control in next-generation quantum devices.
The study shows that the CrOCl layer introduces strong p-type doping in MoS₂, leading to an unprecedented 14-fold enhancement of photoluminescence efficiency at cryogenic temperatures. Magneto-optical measurements revealed that the valley excitons in MoS₂ exhibit remarkable sensitivity to the magnetic ordering of CrOCl, exposing a competition between antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic proximity interactions.
Moreover, symmetry breaking at the CrOCl–MoS₂ interface induced strong exciton linear polarization, with the polarization axis tunable by as much as 90° under magnetic fields. This striking behavior reflects the synergistic interplay between valley coherence and the Faraday effect.
By demonstrating how dual magnetic interfaces can cooperatively and competitively reshape valley exciton properties, this work provides a powerful platform for magnetically reconfigurable valleytronic and spin-optoelectronic devices.
